Penalties
from the hosts’ midfield man Yaya Toure and Saints targetman Rickie
Lambert put honours even before playmaker Samir Nasri capped a fine team
move in the 44th minute.
City’s
penalty was awarded for a foul by Jose Fonte on forward Edin Dzeko,
while the south coast outfit’s spot-kick came after Pablo Zabaleta
felled Jack Cork.
The
first period was marred by what appeared to be a serious knee injury
sustained by Saints forward Jay Rodriguez, who could miss this summer’s
World Cup as a result.
With
the Saints trailing 1-0 midway through the first period, Rodriguez
landed awkwardly after trying to control the ball and went down in
tears.
England manager Roy Hodgson was looking on from the stands and appeared to be worried about his player.
