Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has revealed that Arsene Wenger
tried to convert him into a striker when he was on trial at Arsenal.
The Ivory Coast international has score 20 goals this season, with
Manuel Pellegrini sometimes using him as a holding midfielder, or
sometimes pushing him into a more advanced role.
But he revealed that as a youngster, he was offered an even more
advanced role by Wenger while on trial with the Gunners in 2003.
“When I was in Belgium, I went to Arsenal for a couple of months to
give me some training and I remember my first chat I had with Arsene.
“He asked me, ‘Which position do you want to play?’
“I said, ‘Midfielder’.
“He said: ‘Why? When I saw you training, for me, you looked like a striker.’”
The young Toure then confidently told Wenger to play him in midfield because he could be better than Patrick Vieira!
